FUNERAL SERVICES UPDATED
Vernon Ray Shumate, better known as Ray, age 80, of Laurel Springs, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, September 24, 2024. Ray was born on February 24, 1944, in Wilkes County to the late Wade Elmore and Ruby Lee Richardson Shumate. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Dale Shumate.
Ray proudly served his country in the U.S. Army as a Military Police officer. After his military service, he worked with the North Wilkesboro Police Department until 1974, when he transitioned into the construction business, building homes alongside his father.
He was a man of many passions, enjoying reading, woodworking, and collecting small model churches. Ray spent countless hours in his shop, crafting cabinets and small trinkets. He was also an avid fan of the classic western tv show Gunsmoke. Above all, he cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren, who brought him immense joy.
Ray was a faithful member of Ebenezer Community Church, attending regularly until his health prevented him from doing so.
He is survived by his loving wife, Patsy Hunt Shumate; his son, Lance Ray Shumate of Kingsport, TN; his daughter, Heather Rae Greene and husband Kevin of Deep Gap; his brother, Reid Shumate of North Wilkesboro; two beloved grandchildren, Taylor Raye Cribley and Maddox Ray Greene; one great-grandchild, Ezra Ray Cribley; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Monday, September 30, 2024 at 6:00 pm at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by Rev. Rick Cornejo, Rev. Bennie Roten and Rev. Chris Goodman. The family will receive friends from 5:00-6:00pm prior to the service at Ashelawn.
Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, October 1, 2024 at 1:00 pm at Mountlawn Memorial Park in North Wilkesboro.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
