Laura Virginia Everett Pierce, 84, passed away at her residence on April 19, 2003. Mrs. Pierce was born in Williamston, NC, on October 22, 1918, daughter of the late Earl W. Everett and Ethel Davenport Everett. She was pre-deceased by her husband of 58 years, Paul L. Pierce. She and was also pre-deceased by her brother Lee Roy Powell.
She spent her early years in Grassy Creek, NC, and then moved to Norfolk, where she married and lived in the100 block of W. Bayview Blvd, Norfolk, VA, for 55 years. During World War II, she worked at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard.
Virginia and her husband, Paul, enjoyed their summer home in Grayson County, VA for 27 years. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was an active member of the Ocean View Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and prepared Wednesday night suppers. More recently, she moved her church membership to the Grassy Creek Baptist, Grassy Creek, N.C. She had previously been a member of the Granby Shores Garden Club. She was a loving homemaker, talented artist and an avid gardener.
Survivors include daughter, Nancy Pierce Herrell and her husband Roger of Virginia Beach; daughter Paulette Pierce Peterson and her husband David of Galax, VA; three grandsons, William Russell Spear, III of Boston, MA, Paul Davis of Virginia Beach, James Peterson and his wife Kim of Mouth of Wilson, VA; one granddaughter, Ginny Leigh Peterson Brewer of Raleigh, NC; five great-grandchildren; a half-sister, Delores Sutphin and her husband, Irv; another half-sister, Jackie Irgang; and many other relatives and friends. She has been in the loving care of Rick and Gena Ellison in Grassy Creek, NC since July of 2000. The family would like to thank Rick and Gena for their love, affection and attention while in their care.
A funeral will be held on Tuesday, April 22 at 2:00 p.m. at Grassy Creek Baptist Church, Grassy Creek, N.C., by the Rev. Johnny Huffman. The family will receive friends from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. prior to services. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to Grassy Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, Grassy Creek, N.C.
