William "Bill" Eugene Plummer, age 76 of Grassy Creek, died Sunday, July 3, 2011. Bill was born June 8, 1935 to Phleet Eugene Plummer and Wife Virginia Adams Plummer in Volney, Virginia. He drove a milk truck for local farmers and transported it to Independence, VA during his high school years. He often arrived late for school at Oak Hill Academy; due to this job, yet he was never once reprimanded. Bill graduated from Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, VA in 1955. And later he served as a trustee at the Academy. After being employed locally for a couple of short years, he then went on to join the US Army in 1957. Bill left the service in 1959 and went to work for Halsey Farm Service delivering farming supplies and various other errands for the company. While delivering farm supplies one day on Joe Thomas Road Bill met his future wife Betty Lou Thomas. He and she had made a great "two-some as long as he was able". Betty Lou and Bill were married June 10, 1967. Later, Bill graduated from Old Dominion University in 1970 and taught mechanics at Mt. Rodgers School for 26 years. He also served as Assistant Principal for many years. Bill retired in 1996. He then worked solely on his farm as long as he was physically able. Bill loved working on his tractors and farm equipment. He loved the cattle and livestock the most and enjoyed every aspect of farming. Bill's love of people was reflected in his willingness to help others in times of need. No matter how busy he was, he always had time for others. Bill and Betty attended Helton United Methodist Church for over 40 years as long as they were able to do so. Bill is survived by his wife, Betty Lou Plummer of Little Helton Community; his sister Diann Hawks of Galax, VA; brother Joe Paul Plummer and wife Arlene of Woodlawn, VA; brother Jackie Lee Plummer and wife Sandra of Hillsville, VA and several nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Blaine (Bob) Plummer. Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM Friday, July 8, 2011 at Helton United Methodist Church by Rev. Peter Parish.
