West Jefferson, N.C. - William Stewart Scott, 89, died Sunday morning, February 29, 2004, at Ashe Memorial Hospital in Jefferson, NC following an extended illness. He was born January 22, 1915, in Ashe County, NC, to the late Waddie Hester Scott and Lizzie Ethel Houck Scott. Mr. Scott is survived by his wife, Sallie Miller Scott, and his children, Katrina Scott Sullivan of Charlotte, NC, Danny S. Scott of West Jefferson, and Ann Scott Johnson of West Jefferson. He is also survived by two sisters, Beulah Scott Miller of Greensboro, and Maude Scott Miller of West Jefferson; brothers Hersel W. Scott of Jefferson and Floyd F. Scott of West Jefferson. He was preceded in death by brothers Charles H. Scott and John W. Scott, both of Madison, NC, and Jack H. Scott of West Jefferson.
Mr. Scott was graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College with a degree in education, and he received his Masters of Education from UNCG. He was a veteran of World War II, achieving the rank of Captain in the U.S. Army 12th Infantry Regiment 4th Division, and he was twice awarded the Purple Heart for combat wounds he received following his landing at Utah Beach during the D-Day invasion. He was a member of the local VFW. Mr. Scott was an educator and served as teacher and principal in the Ashe County School System. An avid sportsman and amateur photographer, he will be remembered for his many photographs of Ashe County rural scenes. He was a deacon and Sunday School teacher at Friendly Grove Baptist Church in West Jefferson.
Funeral Service will be held at 2:30 P.M. on Tuesday, March 2, 2004 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel in Jefferson, NC. Burial will follow in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens where military rites will be conducted. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until time of service at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.
