Mrs. Winifred Elliott Rash age 85, of Lansing, NC died on Monday, November 25, 2013 at the Margate Health and Rehab Center. Mrs. Rash was born on March 12, 1928 in Ashe County to Thomas and Flora Elliott. She was the youngest of four children. Mrs. Rash was preceded in death by her parents, husband Virgil C. Rash and two brothers, Raymond Elliott and Bluford Elliott.
Winifred's first job was cooking at Ashe Memorial Hospital, later she worked for Belk's Department Store in West Jefferson. She married Virgil C. Rash on July 15, 1953 and moved to Peoria, Illinois where her husband worked for Caterpillar Industries. While living in Illinois, their son Gary was born on June 7, 1954. After returning to Lansing, NC, five years later, they purchased a farm and built their home along the bank of the New River. Winifred then began a job at Sprague Electric as an assembly operator, where she worked until her retirement.
She was widowed at the young age of 42 and helped Gary on the farm until he finished his schooling. Genealogy was of great interest to Winifred. Besides pursuing her own family history, she compiled obituary histories of the Mountain Union Churches and Primitive Baptist Churches of Ashe County. Among her other interests were being involved with her church choir for which she played the piano for many years. She professed a faith in the Lord, Jesus Christ at an early age and became a member at Oak Grove Baptist Church.
Winifred will be deeply missed by her family, her church and her neighbors and friends.
