Zella Roten

Zella Roten

Zella Mae Hope Blevins Ashby Roten was born in the Phoenix Creek Community in 1911 to Judson and Cora Barker Blevins. She lived in Warrensville for 70 years.
During most of her life she received her medical care from physician and friend Dr. E.J. Miller. The last 17 months of her life were spent at the Ashe Living Center and Seagraves Care Center where she was blessed to receive excellent care from staff of both facilities.

She began working in her father's general store in Phoenix Creek at a young age and in later life, owned and operated a business with her husband. She retired at age 80 after finishing her career with service for Council On Aging. She was a longtime member of Warrensville United Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening, friends and family.

She married Robert Ashby in 1932. They had 7 children together. She married Webb Roten in 1947, they had 3 children together.

She was preceded in death by her 2 husbands, Robert Ashby and Webb Roten, a daughter, Sherrill Roten and a stepson Clarence Ashby.

Zella is survived by 2 sons; Clarence Ashby and wife Margaret of Oriental, NC; Russell Roten and wife Yurika of Los Angeles, CA, Six daughters: Bobbie Sue Miller of Parksburg, PA, Billie Dare Testerman and husband Norman of Glendale Springs, NC, Rhumell Ball and husband Ray of West Jefferson, NC, Nita Jordan and husband Carl of Abingdon, VA, Diane Ashby and husband Tom of Centerville, VA and Shirley Pierce and husband Larry of Reidsville, NC. She has 21 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. She is also survived by 2 brothers, Arlie Blevins and wife Vernie and Hyte Blevins and wife Albertine, all of Jefferson, NC.

Services were held at the Warrensville United Methodist Church on January 21, 2004. The viewing was followed by a memorial service officiated by Rev. Rodney Frye. Family members shared memories with many friends who attended. A graveside service was held on Thursday, January 22, 2004 at Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. Ashelawn Memorial Chapel was in charge of the services.
